Believe it or not, the world is actually pretty safe. Violent crime is way down by almost every metric imaginable. But we also have a 24-hour news cycle that has to fill the void with something, which is why most of us think just stepping outside is a high-risk activity.

That said, it never hurts to err on the side of caution, which is why our friends over at the Clovis Police Department in California suggest wrapping your phone number around your child’s wrist when going to crowded public places like the mall or a busy park.

Follow these other helpful tips from the Clovis PD and every breath you take will be a sigh of relief…

Tip #1: Driving at night? Don’t let oncoming high beams blind you. Close one eye until the car has passed, then alternate winks until your vision is back to normal.

Tip #2: Getting groceries? Hand-bag-wearers can keep a carabiner on their purse and attach it to the cart to prevent purse thieves from running away with their valuables.

Tip #3: Got a luxury car? We all want to see what’s inside, including cops. Turns out you’re more likely to get pulled over for a minor reason simply so the cop can add you to their cool car collection. So if you’re driving a nice car be extra careful when you’re driving by an officer, and if they do pull you over, play it extra cool.

Tip #4: Drive smarter at the end of the month. Cops are more ‘laxed in the beginning of the month because they aren’t trying to make a last-minute quota. Be more mindful towards the end when cops are under pressure to write more tickets. If you do get caught by the police, be honest! If you’re polite and don’t make excuses, you’re more likely to get off with a warning instead of a ticket.
