Do you compost? Only about 28% of Americans do, but 67% say they would if it was easier.

For years, composting options have been limited. Either you put a bulky compost bin on your counter to hold your food scraps which left a foul odor in your kitchen, or you had to make the trek to your outdoor composter after every meal. Neither way is ideal.

Now, a new, eco-friendly innovation called Lomi is hoping to change the complicated (and smelly) personal composting process.

Lomi is a countertop composter from Pela. It’s compact, odor-free, fast, and it has three settings, with one that composts waste in as little as three hours.

Here’s an up-close look at Lomi.

Food waste and fertilizer in a garden

Composting is a great way to minimize household garbage by reducing food waste. The process turns leftover scraps into fertilizer, which you can use in your garden or indoor plants.

What is Lomi?

A healthy garden as the result of composting with Lomi

The first thing you’ll notice about Lomi is its size as it’s a compact 16 inches wide by 12 inches high. Its small size allows you to put it almost anywhere, like on your kitchen countertop or in a pantry.

Lomi weighs about 22 pounds. Don’t worry about its weight too much, though, as it has a removable bucket inside, so you don’t have to carry the entire unit out to your garden or houseplants to sprinkle the fertilizer it has made.

Lomi is an electric device that plugs into an outlet and starts turning food waste into usable soil. It’s energy-efficient, with each composting cycle costing about 15 cents to run.

Lomi has a lid with carbon filters that you’ll open and close every time you put waste into it. This lid does an excellent job of containing odors and is one of the main benefits of using this product.

Lomi is similar to other composters in some ways, but its odor-free lid and mechanical functions take it to the next level.

How Lomi works

Once you set up your Lomi (which is easy to do), you can choose between three composting settings: Eco-express, Lomi Approved mode, and Lomi Grow mode.

Eco-express is the fastest composting mode, as it only takes about three to five hours to turn your food waste into dirt. This dirt isn’t fertilizer and should go into the trash or green bin.

Lomi Approved takes five to eight hours and also turns your waste into dirt that you’ll need to throw out. The difference is that this mode accepts certain bioplastics and compostable consumer goods.

Finally, Lomi Grow mode turns your food waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer in 16 to 20 hours.

Lomi works by using heat, beneficial microorganisms, and physical grinding to assist decomposition. The machine itself is responsible for the heating and grinding, and it comes with pods that contain the organisms that finalize the process.

This sleek, eco-friendly composter creates the perfect environment to compost your food waste quickly, and since it can hold a few days of scraps from the average family, you’ll rarely have to worry about filling it up to max capacity.

What else should you know about Lomi?

Everything you need to know to get started with personal composting comes right out of the box with Lomi. You should be aware, though, that you’ll need to replace the charcoal filters every three months and purchase more Lomi pods when you run out.

This device accepts most food waste, but you’ll want to avoid putting fruit pits, bones, cooking oils, and sugary liquids into your composter as it doesn’t accept those. You’ll also want to chop up dense items like flower bulbs and corn cobs before putting them in.

Are you ready to start composting the quick and easy way?

Overall, Lomi makes composting far more accessible for the average person by eliminating the mess, odor, and extra steps associated with other more time-consuming methods. The result is a cleaner, odor-free kitchen that helps you do your part to protect the environment.

Would you be more likely to compost if you had a Lomi composter? Let us know in the comment section below, and don’t forget to share this post with friends and family who are interested in composting but don’t want the hassle.
