With all this time at home, surely at least a few of you have been trying your hand at home gardening.

But let’s be honest… not all of us were born with a green thumb. In fact, some of us around the office have become rather notorious for our “home garden fails”…

No, we haven’t grown tomatoes when we were expecting peppers. But what we expected to turn out looking like this:

Often ended up looking like this:

So, where have us newbie gardeners gone wrong?!

Well, it turns out there are a few common reasons why most first-timers have such trouble with their home garden. And today, we’re going to expose the 5 biggest reasons – plus, we’ll even show you a cool solution that makes it easy for ANYONE to garden like a pro. So grab your gloves and let’s dig in!

Home Garden Mistake #1: Planting food you and/or your family doesn’t actually enjoy.

While many simply enjoy the act of gardening once they’ve had a few successful grows, it can be really difficult to keep up the motivation when you’re new to the art.

And, when the stuff you’re growing doesn’t sound appealing to you… then it can be much easier to give up.

On the other hand, having a delicious grow to look forward to can be a HUGE motivator. Not only do you get to enjoy the process, you have something scrumptious to look forward to.

That’s why we always recommend growing something you and your family can get excited about eating. It may seem like a small thing, but it really helps!

Home Garden Mistake #2: Not following the guidelines properly.

We’ll be honest: We’re not expert gardeners ourselves. (Well, Christopher is, but he refuses to reveal his secrets… leading some of us to think he buys from the store… but that’s a story for another day.)

That’s why we always follow the guidelines for whatever it is we’re growing. Sometimes that means watering at the right time – or moving the plant to get more sunlight (if it’s an indoor grow).

Checking the natural conditions for the plant(s) you’re growing can also help (more on that in a moment). For example, if you know the plant enjoys sunlight, make sure it’s not accidentally getting too much shade.

Like most things in life, following the instructions is always the best move until you’re ready to start “getting creative” with the rules.

(Psst… keep reading for a “failproof” way to stick to the instructions, whether or not you’re always on top of your gardening game!)

Home Garden Mistake #3: Forgetting to water your plants.

Well, this one’s probably obvious – and yet, it’s probably the most common mistake people make.

Watering your plants on a regular schedule is essential to their growth. (In case you don’t know: water transports important nutrients through the plant.)

But of course, you don’t want to over-water them, which reduces the oxygen in the soil and leads to root death.

There are a few tricks you can use, like setting a calendar reminder (or telling your kids they can’t watch TV until they water the garden)… but if you go for the solution we suggest at the end of this article, you don’t even have to remind yourself. It’s pretty cool!

Home Garden Mistake #4: Poor environment or incorrect positions.

There’s a reason different plants thrive in different parts of the world. While it may sound awesome to have a mango grove in your backyard, chances are good you’ll end up with some sad-looking twigs in the long run (unless you live in India, of course).

That’s why it’s important to consider your local environment when planning your garden. We recommend this site for figuring that out!

Home Garden Mistake #5: Doing it alone (instead of getting the family involved).

An old African proverb says: “It takes a village to raise a child.”

It’s a similar concept with gardens – it takes a family to grow a garden!

Getting your family involved not only ensures that you don’t miss out on the watering, it truly helps take care of pretty much everything on this list.

When the whole family gets involved in planning, maintaining and harvesting, you’ll find much more motivation (even if things go wrong).

Of course, it never hurts to get a little help… and these days, you can even get help from the plants themselves! Let us explain…
