If you’re like us, you’ve been receiving a few more packages than usual lately. And we’re not just talking about the past few months (although that’s definitely had an impact – thank you delivery drivers for keeping us all sane!).

Indeed: E-commerce has taken the world by storm. That’s great for all of us – it means more convenience, more jobs, and more opportunities for small-time inventors with big ideas to be discovered.

However, it also means a lot of cardboard boxes. And while some of those boxes can be recycled, their lifespan is still limited. As we ship more and more, we create tons of trash!

So, what can we do? We’re not going to stop shopping online, that’s for sure! It sounds like this is a situation that calls for a smart, sustainable innovation…

Introducing THE BOX: A sustainable package that can be delivered 1,000+ times!

LivingPackets, a sustainable packaging company based in Berlin, has recently announced THE BOX: a smart delivery box that can be used at least 1,000 times. Then, it can be broken down and recycled to get another 1,000 uses from the same material!

Companies could use THE BOX to send their products, then consumers can send it back. This wouldn’t add costs to the consumer – in fact, it could even reduce prices due to reduced packaging costs.

THE BOX is made from proprietary recycled materials, and it even includes advanced electronics. These electronics include sensors for temperature, weight and humidity, plus a camera and alarm system. This allows the company to track all shipments and reuse boxes.

It also allows for paperless labeling – which means we save tons of paper on labels, as well as from reusing boxes. Plus, THE BOX features a clever design that prevents the need for bubble wrap. (Yes, that means the tradition of popping bubble wrap will soon be a thing of the past… a little sad for the nostalgic among us, yes, but overall it’s a huge win for the environment!)

THE BOX eliminates 100 billion cartons each year, saving 700 million trees while delivering the best e-commerce experience,” says Alex C., CEO of LivingPackets.

The box is still in design stages, and LivingPackets is currently running a crowdfunding campaign to fund production. You may even start seeing them on your driveway sometime this year!

Whether or not THE BOX becomes a success, we applaud their effort to make global logistics more sustainable – and look forward to seeing what else it inspires!
